John was one of the smartest guys I ever met particularly in math. We lost touch after high school, but I'd "bump" into him once in a great while as we lived near one another. I only saw him one time later in life after his military service I believe. He was in the hospital as he had been ill and I called on hospitals during my career with a pharmaceutical company. I remember him for being a good friend in high school and helping save my "rear end" in math numerous times. I always thought he would become one of the great mathmatical wizards of my lifetime.

Barbara Bergman was in my "Section" in 9th grade at Beverly Hills, Jr. High.  She and I were both on the Cheerleading Squad together and I remember that one of the cheerleaders had to wear the "Mascot" costume during the football games.  The BHJHS mascot was the "Buckskin" and the costume was about 20 pounds of suede and fringe (I  think there was even an old coon-skin hat involved, too) And of course, who ended up having to wear that heavy old costume, but probably the prettiest cheerleader of all, poor Barbara Bergman.  And she wore it well!  You were a good sport, Barbara Bergman.  Loved ya!

I, too, admired John.  I always found him to be a kind, friendly and soft-spoken classmate.  I remember John also as an outstanding athlete but more importantly as a very good student.  John was married to another Upper Darby graduate from the class of 1969, his High school "Sweetheart", Chris (Rankin) Harms.  It is my understanding that John was a teacher and a Middle School Principal at Drexel Hill Junior High.  Rest in Peace.

Diane was my girlfllriend in High School. Having her on my arm changed my status from a nerdy outcast to a cool dude.I regret not trying to stay in touch, I left for college after High School so that was that. I only ever saw her one more time  when I came home during a school break. She was only 47 when she died. I hope that she had children and a loving husband to share her short life with. I will always remember the first girl to ever show kindness to me.

He was somebody that you just wanted to be around, because his smile, easy going personality, and overall good nature made everything a lot more fun. My guess is that by now he's retired from singing in the heavenly chorus and coaching St. Peter's softball team...

I was not a classmate of Peter's, but my husband Lowell Bodger was a very, very close friend of Peter's after Peter moved to Manhattan.  They met through a mutual friend, Bruce Frankel, and had a meeting of the minds almost immediately.  For a year after Peter's death, Lowell lit a candle for him every single day.  He never really recovered from the loss of his friend.  He referred to Peter often, and even when Lowell was sinking into Alzheimer's Disease he still remembered Peter clearly.  Lowell died in 2010.

Peter was a prodigiously intelligent man, a brilliant thinker, and a talented writer. It would have been so interesting to see what he would have done had he lived longer.

Robert Sills

- - May 27th, 2015

I had long wondered what had become of my old friend, Bob Sills, Class '68. I tried to reach him using internet information and got a very nice note from his brother Richard regarding Bob's passing last year. I've included excerpts below:

Dear Randy,

Thank you for your note, and for your concern.  As a matter of fact, I do remember hearing your name from my talks with Bob.  He always considered you one of his best friends from the old days in Drexel Hill, which we all remembered fondly.

Sadly, Bob died on May 27, 2015.  He was only 64 years old, and his death was a complete surprise.  He had always been active – traveling, hiking, and pursuing his many interests.   So far as any of us knew, he was in reasonably good health.  Bob had diabetes, but it was controlled by medication, and there was no reason to think his longevity would be affected.

Bob went to a baseball game with a friend on the last day of his life.  As you probably know, that was one of Bob’s favorite pastimes.

So Bob left the baseball park, took a subway to the parking lot where left his car, and drove himself home.  Bob then went to sleep, in his own bed, and never woke up....

                                                         Best wishes,

                                                         Richard Sills

Bob and I became friends when he moved to Drexel Hill and started attending Aronimink Elementary. It seems like it was 3rd or 4th grade that we first met. We remained friends throughout school, but lost track after he headed to Cal Tech, and I went to William and Mary. I often wondered what had become of Bob and just recently contacted his older brother Richard. Although I regret not having contacted my old friend when he was still with us,  Richard's letter was very reassuring that Bob had led a very full and productive life before passing peacefully into that great beyond. I'll remember Bob Sills as the smartest and probably the  funniest guy I'll ever know. RIP Bob...

Bob & I became friends at Aronimink Elementary School and stayed friends through UDHS graduation. Most of us knew Bob as this incredibly smart guy who scored 800s on all SAT standard and advanced tests. However, Bob also had a really quick wit; and although he wasn't athletic, he had a strong love for the game of baseball. I recall going to several Phillies games with Bob as well as hopping on the bus and "el" to go downtown to the Franklin Instritute. I don't think Bob ever beat the Franklin Institute computer at Tic Tac Toe; but if anybody could have, it would have been Bob Sills. We'll miss you, Bob.....

Craig was a good friend in elementary school at Lansdowne Friends and again at Upper Darby High. I only shared Art class with him with Mr. Snyder as teacher. Todd Rundgren was in the same class with us. Craig did a chalk prtrait of musician Glenn Miller for me and I had it framed. I stil have it. He was a great guy to be around with a very funny sense of humor. I've never forgotten him. It was sad to lose his talent so young.

I knew Craig from his work as cartoonist on the Acorn staff. He was a very talented guy with a great sense of humor. He was definitely a young soul that was taken from us far too early...

Streitfield, Robert "Bob" H. (Navy CPO retired), 62 A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert "Bob" H. Streitfield (Navy CPO retired), age 62, will be held at the Mayfield Intermediate School 8550 Signal Hill Road, Manassas, Virginia on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 12:00 to 1:30pm. Bob passed on February 1, 2013 at the Walter Reed National Naval Medical Center. He was born on 01 July 1950 in Chester, PA and graduated from Upper Darby High school in 1968. His love of music was spawned at an early age and he continued to play alto saxophone, flute and clarinet until health complications intervened, this past year. Bob served in the United States Navy Band for over 23 years, retiring in 1995. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in 1977 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and from Troy State University with a Master's of Science in Management in 1992. He went on to teach band for Cumberland Middle School in Cumberland, Rhode Island from 1995 to 2003. He also taught private instrumental students and was the conductor for the Jamestown Community Band in Jamestown, RI. In 2003, Robert and his family moved to Fort Belvoir, Virginia and he was later hired in 2007 as the band teacher at Mayfield Intermediate School in Manassas. Aside from his love of teaching music, he was an avid reader, one heck of a cook, and devoted husband and father. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Streitfield Sr., Irma Hazzard (Schnell) , and his sister Shirley Noble. All were from the Philadelphia area. Robert is survived by his loving wife of over 23 years, Lynette Christine (Heine) Streitfield, a Sergeant Major assigned to Army National Guard Headquarters in Arlington, VA, their daughter, Michaela Rani, a senior and rowing team co-captain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his daughters Lauren and Nasia who reside in Newport, RI. Robert will always be adored by his two surviving sisters, Sandra MacWilliams and Rhonda Hearon Roesler, both of the Philadelphia area. He has nine nieces and nephews and several grand-nieces and nephews. He is sorely missed by those who knew him well and loved his sense of humor. The family requests that donations in his honor be made to The Lymphoma Research Foundation at: http://www.lymphoma.org/

Miss you Bob.

Bob and I were friends throughout high school. I never heard a bad word said about him and never heard him say a bad word about anybody. We talked about anything and everything. I always regretted we didn't stay in touch after we left high school. He was a good listener and gave good advice often with humor. After reading the summary of his life I admire him even more. I am a big fan of our military, musicians in particular from John Phillip Sousa to Glenn Miller to Bob Streitfield!
