My sister, who graduated with Joel,  and I, met him, his brother and their wonderful family when we lived at Parklane East Apartments.  I will always remember his beautiful lettering. ( I tried to duplicate ) And his lovely Nanny that tailored my Mom's clothing. It is so sad to see he has gone. What a superb person he was. Much love to his family.

John was one of the smartest guys I ever met particularly in math. We lost touch after high school, but I'd "bump" into him once in a great while as we lived near one another. I only saw him one time later in life after his military service I believe. He was in the hospital as he had been ill and I called on hospitals during my career with a pharmaceutical company. I remember him for being a good friend in high school and helping save my "rear end" in math numerous times. I always thought he would become one of the great mathmatical wizards of my lifetime.

Barbara Bergman was in my "Section" in 9th grade at Beverly Hills, Jr. High.  She and I were both on the Cheerleading Squad together and I remember that one of the cheerleaders had to wear the "Mascot" costume during the football games.  The BHJHS mascot was the "Buckskin" and the costume was about 20 pounds of suede and fringe (I  think there was even an old coon-skin hat involved, too) And of course, who ended up having to wear that heavy old costume, but probably the prettiest cheerleader of all, poor Barbara Bergman.  And she wore it well!  You were a good sport, Barbara Bergman.  Loved ya!

Obituary

Philip Brettun Caton Prominent Urban Planner & Affordable Housing Specialist Philip "Phil" Brettun Caton of Pennington, New Jersey, passed away from ALS on February 8, 2023. Though he battled illness in his final years, his gentle spirit, sharp intellect, and good humor shone bright throughout. He passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Phil graduated from Princeton University in 1972, with a degree in architecture and urban planning. While there, he served as president of the Tower Club. He maintained a special affinity for Princeton, returning almost every year for reunions, always with wife and sons in tow. Phil started his career as a city planner in Trenton and later became the Director of Community Development. At the age of 28, he was appointed as Director of the Division of Housing for the State of New Jersey, overseeing roughly 400 employees. In 1979, Phil and two partners set out on their own, forming what is now Clarke Caton Hintz – a planning and architecture firm. In the years that followed, he became one of the state's foremost experts in affordable housing and served as a planning consultant to scores of New Jersey municipalities. Phil also acted as the principal planner for Old York Village, a pioneering and award-winning planned development in Chesterfield, NJ, that preserved farmland and prevented suburban sprawl. In 2008, he was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners. At the time of his retirement in 2020, Clarke Caton Hintz had grown to over 30 employees, relocated to a renovated Masonic Temple in downtown Trenton, and had twice been named New Jersey's architecture firm of the year. Phil married the love of his life, Lisa, in 1983. She was his perfect complement. Together, they raised three sons: Tyler, Spencer, and Bryce. Phil was the consummate father. He coached the boys' rec soccer teams, played them ragtime piano each night, read them science fiction and fantasy books before bed, took them for countless rounds of golf, gave them business advice, and so much more – all with a generosity of time and energy that belied his prolific professional career. Perhaps Phil's proudest single achievement was the house he designed for himself, Lisa, and the boys. Affectionately referred to as "the ranch", the house is a work of art – Phil's beautiful aesthetic sense, made real. He designed it with an abundance of love and it has since been host to many of his family's fondest memories. Phil is survived by his wife, his three sons, his grandson, Murphy, and his brother and dear friend, Chip. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Citizen's Campaign, D & R Greenway or Isles in

Obituary

James D. Clendening, 72, of Old Forge and formerly of Blakeslee, died Monday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. His wife is the former Debbie Hawley. The couple would have celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary on April 17.
Born April 27, 1950, in Upper Darby, son of the late Robert and Harriet Pittenger Clendening, Jim was a graduate of Upper Darby High School, where he excelled at wrestling. Jim served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Prior to his accident, he was the co-owner of Woody's Country House, Blakeslee. A man of great faith, Jim was a member of Cornerstone Alliance Church, Dickson City.
Jim had a life full of enjoyment. If you caught any of their social media posts, you'd agree that he's lived his best life. His favorite place to be was with his wife, soaking up the sun on the deck of Joan and Charlie's place. There was nowhere better to him than sitting near the Delaware Bay at Gandy's Beach with his family and friends. When you became friends with Jim, it was for life, and he had many good friends from childhood whom he kept in contact with throughout the years. Jim enjoyed sports, playing softball into his adult years, and he cheered on his Eagles and Phillies. He had a love for Harley-Davidson and classic cars, but most of all, he loved his family. There was nothing better to him than a Sunday dinner sitting with his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his granddogs, and even his bonus kids and bonus grandkids. Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care Jim was given during his illness by the health care staff at Geisinger Wyoming Valley ICU, and also to the staff at Allied Services Rehab Hospital. Your care and compassion toward Jim and his family will never be forgotten.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Jennifer Serena and husband, William Howells, Gouldsboro; and Jessica Little, Old Forge; his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Serena and Payton Little; his siblings, Robert Clendening, Wakefield, Mass.; Joan Coyle, Glen Mills; and Grace Gow and John Clendening, both of Drexel Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Jim's life will be held Saturday at noon in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with the Rev. Nester Soto, pastor of Cornerstone Alliance Church, officiating.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hero Company, 4130 E. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA 92807; or Cornerstone Alliance Church, 938 Main St., Dickson City, PA 18519.
Please visit the funeral home website to leave an online condolence.

Leslie truly was one of a kind.  We became friends while attending Drexel Hill Junior High and remained friends until her tragic passing.  The years flew by and we reconnected at the 40th UDHS reunion and we just picked up as if no time had been lost.  We enjoyed many great times together and shared the ups and downs of life.  In the last few years with Leslie, we so enjoyed watching Downton Abbey together -- we'd have a sleepover at her house, enjoy a great meal, get in our jammies and react to the latest happenings on that show.  I treasure a card she sent me when I moved into my new home, and it's now framed and in my living room.  Leslie, you may be gone but never forgotten.  Fondly, Tricia (aka Pat Heenan) De Blander

Obituary

Gale Darlene Jackman, 71 of Guyton, Georgia passed away on September 11, 2022. She was born on November 4, 1950, in Queens, NY to the late John Jackman and Dorothy Krestan Jackman. Gale was raised by her mom in a suburb of Philadelphia and attended the Upper Darby Township public schools. She began working at age 18 and worked until retirement at age 67.
In her late 20’s Gale moved just outside of Washington, DC, and then in her late 30’s to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she lived for many years. She enjoyed living in various parts of the United States. This led her to move to the Savannah area where she was employed by Union Camp, Gulfstream, and Thomas & Hutton. She retired from Thomas & Hutton in 2018.
Gale was an avid traveler taking many trips internationally – first with her mom, then nationally with her mom and their friend Carol, then with her friends Beverly and Sam, and her friend Nancy. It was not uncommon for Gale to take three or four trips every year!
Gale was also a history buff – especially of the Civil War and she visited most of the battlefields during her travels. Gale enjoyed movies, especially documentaries, and many types of music. She was a competitive ballroom dancer and enjoyed researching her Czechoslovakian heritage.
At Gale’s request, there are no planned events to honor her life. Those who loved her hope that readers will consider making a contribution to Hospice Savannah in her memory (PO Box 13190 Savannah, GA 31416 or call (912) 355–2289).

I went through Aronimink Elementary, Drexel Hill Jr. High, and Upper Darby but didn't get to be good friends with Steve until 11th grade.  He shared a good bit about his long-standing heart issues (which I assume were what took him from us at a young age), but he had such an amazing zest for life. He was somebody that you just wanted to be around, because his smile, easy going personality, and overall good nature made everything a lot more fun. My guess is that by now he's retired from singing in the heavenly chorus and coaching St. Peter's softball team...

I was not a classmate of Peter's, but my husband Lowell Bodger was a very, very close friend of Peter's after Peter moved to Manhattan.  They met through a mutual friend, Bruce Frankel, and had a meeting of the minds almost immediately.  For a year after Peter's death, Lowell lit a candle for him every single day.  He never really recovered from the loss of his friend.  He referred to Peter often, and even when Lowell was sinking into Alzheimer's Disease he still remembered Peter clearly.  Lowell died in 2010.

Peter was a prodigiously intelligent man, a brilliant thinker, and a talented writer. It would have been so interesting to see what he would have done had he lived longer.

Robert Sills

- - May 27th, 2015

I had long wondered what had become of my old friend, Bob Sills, Class '68. I tried to reach him using internet information and got a very nice note from his brother Richard regarding Bob's passing last year. I've included excerpts below:

Dear Randy,

Thank you for your note, and for your concern.  As a matter of fact, I do remember hearing your name from my talks with Bob.  He always considered you one of his best friends from the old days in Drexel Hill, which we all remembered fondly.

Sadly, Bob died on May 27, 2015.  He was only 64 years old, and his death was a complete surprise.  He had always been active – traveling, hiking, and pursuing his many interests.   So far as any of us knew, he was in reasonably good health.  Bob had diabetes, but it was controlled by medication, and there was no reason to think his longevity would be affected.

Bob went to a baseball game with a friend on the last day of his life.  As you probably know, that was one of Bob’s favorite pastimes.

So Bob left the baseball park, took a subway to the parking lot where left his car, and drove himself home.  Bob then went to sleep, in his own bed, and never woke up....

                                                         Best wishes,

                                                         Richard Sills

Bob & I became friends at Aronimink Elementary School and stayed friends through UDHS graduation. Most of us knew Bob as this incredibly smart guy who scored 800s on all SAT standard and advanced tests. However, Bob also had a really quick wit; and although he wasn't athletic, he had a strong love for the game of baseball. I recall going to several Phillies games with Bob as well as hopping on the bus and "el" to go downtown to the Franklin Instritute. I don't think Bob ever beat the Franklin Institute computer at Tic Tac Toe; but if anybody could have, it would have been Bob Sills. We'll miss you, Bob.....

From Randy Porter on August 17th, 2016
Bob and I became friends when he moved to Drexel Hill and started attending Aronimink Elementary. It seems like it was 3rd or 4th grade that we first met. We remained friends throughout school, but lost track after he headed to Cal Tech, and I went to William and Mary. I often wondered what had become of Bob and just recently contacted his older brother Richard. Although I regret not having contacted my old friend when he was still with us,  Richard's letter was very reassuring that Bob had led a very full and productive life before passing peacefully into that great beyond. I'll remember Bob Sills as the smartest and probably the  funniest guy I'll ever know. RIP Bob...
